This site is a tribute to William Bushnell (Bill), who was born on 31st May 1939, much loved husband, father and grandfather to his wife, Honor, son Paul, daughter Debbie and his many grandchildren. Bill will always be remembered by his family and also the numerous athletes and schoolchildren that he coached and taught over the last 50 years.
Bill was a charismatic and determined individual who loved most sports, but in particular had a long lasting passion for athletics, firstly as an international javelin thrower himself, and then as a throws coach of much distinction. He taught maths at Tabor High School in Braintree, Essex, for over 30 years, and in addition to being a fantastic teacher was renowned for his humour and entertaining stories about life, sport and education.
Bill willingly gave so much of his time to help and inspire throwers of all ages and abilities to succeed and reach their full potential. He installed a great work ethic and competitiveness into his athletes, but never lost sight that athletics should be fun and enjoyable. It has been heart-warming to be reminded of the huge positive influence that Bill has had over so many young people, delivered in his own inimitable style.
We would be really grateful if you could kindly let Debbie Callaway know, if you are planning to attend Bill's funeral and wake on 17th May (full details below) - daveandeb.c@virginmedia.com Bill was not keen on flowers, so should our friends and family wish to contribute, a memorial has been established in favour of Southampton Athletics Club. As Bill would have wanted, we will ensure that any contributions will be used to help in the development of throwing events locally.

Sorry to have just learned of this sad news, best wishes to Debbie, Paul and Honor, remembering Bill. Always had time to stop for a chat whenever we were down at the track with Emma. A lovely man and inspirational coach.
I have just heard the sad news. Bill invested many hours coaching me in the javelin and discus. They were great times. Honor, Debbie and Paul, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family
